When we first learn about a mental health concept like “acceptance”, we’re often at a point when we’re struggling. And that struggles can come from dealing with a lot of thoughts and images and memories that are really terrible. So of course we want to get rid of them! But then we approach acceptance and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy like a new ritual. We’re looking for something to clean away the brain stuff we hate. But that’s not acceptance at all. That’s the opposite.
