We increase the time and energy spent with technology, just like we did last week, but the key difference this week is that we’ll tie it directly to growing something we value online. We’ll continue to cut out the old compulsions, but that’s just stuff we don’t do anymore because we’re giving our time and energy to things that matter to us.
The internet is like a garden where your actions grow things. Your actions are always growing something in that garden, whether you like it or not. Maybe those actions are just growing a VCs valuation of an app that’s sucking up your life. You may not like what you’ve been growing. But that’s wonderful you recognize that! Now you can make changes! You can plant something different and grow that with actions that nourish and help you both to flourish.
Grab those values you identified in the previous chapter and create a workout plan for the week. How are you going to give to those each day? How are you going to increase the amount of time each day that you’re around technology while choosing to do those activities that you care about? Consider the challenges and the supports. You probably have an idea of what’s challenging now. Put in place the boundaries that are going to help you. If you know that using your phone in the evenings or the mornings is going to quickly descend into social media doom scrolling, you don’t need to work on that yet.
