Now that you’ve started to explore challenges, let’s be super honest about how you can help yourself with overcoming those challenges. What supports will help you?
You’ve explored changes around the internet now for three days. And maybe that was doable through sheer force and the fact that it’s new. But we need to keep it going. To make this sustainable will likely involve changes in your life that don’t seem directly connected to technology or the internet.
This exercise around challenges and supports can really shift the focus of the work you’re doing. Perhaps you now see the work for the month ahead isn’t really about cutting out online compulsions, but actually about developing healthier ways to build social relationships, or learning how to not distract yourself from uncomfortable feelings, or recognizing you need to give yourself the validation you’re chasing from others, or so many other skills that can serve us in giving our time and energy to what we care about in life.
EXERCISE: What supports will help you navigate your challenges?
Add to the previous exercise with supports that will help you heal the past wounds, throw out the old habits, change unhelpful beliefs, and address environmental factors getting in your way. Maybe your online behaviors were attempts to get something. What is a healthier way to fulfill that need, that’s better for you and your community? Maybe you can see you’ve been trying to get something, that you didn’t have in the past, but now you have it, and you can make the shift to giving, letting that younger self know you’re no longer in that place you were in the past.
