Where are you going?
Values are a powerful tool when we’re working on mental health skills. Our values show how and where and why we want to spend our time and energy in life. This course is all about exercises to explore what matters to you and then identify a practical set of values to navigate the wilderness of life.
Time: Approximately 30 minutes per day for 10 days.
Content: Video, audio, and text
Materials: You’ll need materials for writing and drawing
Here are three things you’ll LEARN in this course:
How to explore your values.
Doing actions we value instead of getting caught up in lots of unhealthy behaviors sounds simple enough. But after decades of trying to control uncertainty, diminishing your own needs and desires because of insecurity, and fueling everything with fear, it’s not always an easy task to even identify things you actually want to create and build in this world. This course will share exercises with you that help you identify what matters to you, on the large scale of life, but also very practically, in simple, day-to-day activities.
How to identify values that fuel more struggle with mental health.
Values are directions. Labeling a direction as a “value” doesn’t mean that direction will take you to a magically wonderful place. We can easily choose values that only take us deeper into the crocodile-infested mental illness swamp. So let’s not do that.
How to translate abstract values into healthy actions you do today.
Aligning our actions with our values is a key component of making changes that support recovery or help us with maintaining great mental health and fitness. Identifying something you care about and announcing that you care about and even writing it down on a sticky note is not the same as taking action today, in this moment. The action component of values is critical. These are directions we move in. But it’s not always clear how to take a big, abstract, life-guiding value, and turn it into an action right now. So we’ll look at how to do that. The goal here is to make values practical and useful for your mental fitness journey.
